Fish Lips and a Mowhak

Those of you who know me, know I like to try and capture the personality of an animal when out photographing. It's not often thought that I find a fish with an attitude. This one just freaked me out as it swam up and stared me down.

Today is an odd kind of day for me. I'm torn between wanting to get out and do some photographing or nesting at home.

Tonight will be fun. The city holds it's annual Holiday of Lights and Grand Illumination Parade. I'm gonna take the kids to it and they and I are really excited about it. I'm hopeful that I'll be able to get some good photos but with 100,000 people expected in attendance it will be difficult.

fund-raiser

Some fund raisers are more successful than other. Even when attempted half heartedly.

Support your local schools. They are producing the next generation of workers.

Here was an interesting fellow I met today, Bill. A very friendly fellow, he is 86 years old.

Bill can only get around on a walker now. At age 18 he suffered a heart attack and since then pneumonia twice. It very nearly took his life both times.

Bill has lost everyone in his family except his niece who cares for him in her home. She works at one of the local beauty parlors and he goes in with her, everyday. He sits and chats and walks up and down a strip mall for exercise.

I got quite the lecture about smoking. He told me he use to smoke cigars but didn't inhale. He also smoked a pipe, but put COFFEE grinds in it and smoked that instead of tobacco. I have never heard of such a thing.

Two Worlds Apart

As you enter Richmond from some roads, you abruptly move between two worlds in the blink of an eye.   The industrial areas but right up to the downtown area;  a world of tall grand structures, rich culture, and historic areas wonderfully preserved.  Moving through this overpass is like going through a portal to another dimension.

Urban Views The Corner Store

Continuing along with my Urban Views Series......

I always remember, how when I was growing up, there was a corner store that everyone hung out at. It was those corner stores that created a sense of belonging to a community. Good Times for sure.

Urban Noir

There can be something appealing, embarrassing, and dark about the underbelly of the city as shown in this photograph of the bowls of an overpass.

Street Art Revitalization

Speaking of Urban Art. It is so nice to see the wonderful Murals that have brought blighted areas, ungly allys, and boring industrial walls to life. Many cities and urban areas have found that this approach is a key piece of successful revitalization. I say - Viva La Street Art. I would much rather children see fish in the sea than offensive and abusive words.

Death Toll for tobacco companies

Virginia has long been a tabacco state. The state is home to one of the largest cigarette manufactures in the world, Philip Morris, located in Richmond, Va.. In what is sure to be a death knoll to these profit driven manufactures, the Virginia State Legislator has passed a law banning smoking in restaurants and clubs. Not a good thing when your home town is no longer willing to support you.

Pelicans Suffering from Frost Bite

Many of the pelicans in the area are suffering from frostbite. Today, in Virginia Beach, Va near Rudy Inlet and Owls Creek, the Wildlife Response, Inc team will round up and rehab the birds. They feel they will be able to care for them until they're healthy enough for release back into the wildlife.

After spicey food

I was playing some more last night with light painting.   This one made me think of how my tummy feels, an hour after I eat spicy Mexican food.

Here are some Camellia's shots from Friday's Outing, for those flower lovers amongst you.

Here is a black and white version that better show the many layers of the petals.  This was an extraordinary specimen.

Physiography Light

I am working on a new technique called Phyisograhy.   I am mapping the light as it moves through a circular pendulem movement.    I'm still a little clunky with it, but having fun doing it and enjoy the many patterns it can create.  A fun thing to do on a rainy day.
